This pains me greatly. I LOVE Blogger. It's simplicity, analytics, ability to write long blabbery... but what can I do. I am a kind of a person who jump off a cliff if all the cool kids are jumping off. Maybe it's an immigrant experience, but I do pretty much anything to fit in.

I know I've been telling my friends over a year that I'm moving to Tumblr, and I finally did it. My blogger is officially closed (at least until Blogger becomes cool again). Please see do follow my posts in Tumblr:
I know, I know, a super late post. What happened?! My apologies. I was told and convinced to move my blog to tumblr back in early summer. I hate all things moving, physically and electronically. Also I like blogger so much. But I really should move, that's what the universe seems to flow. Everyone looks at me like a dirty hobo whenever I told them I have a blogger instead of tumblr. I will have a brand new blog on tumblr this month. Double owly promises!Hyein Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09903329646173132601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412446009443453167.post-2525817731100089882012-05-04T22:26:00.000-07:002012-05-05T05:18:42.549-07:00Life is Darkness - Sketchbook Volume 1

"Why so ugly gray?" You might ask. It's because I made it look like one of my favourite sketchbooks. I love utilitarian thick empty gray cardboards my sketchbook has. I first saw this kind of binding from ReadyMade books. And I'm still in love with such binding. It's fun to draw on the cover.

I also often cover my sketchbook with stickers. The zine suppose to look like my sketchbook. Thanks Selena for the idea! And also J. W. Cotter's Driven by Lemons.
This is very shameful to admit. But for the past FOUR DAYS, I've been playing Solaris on loop, everyday, while robotically scanning and re-touching images. It is one of those perfect movies with my favourite theme of memory and letting go. It is a sad movie though (although parts of it makes me smile), that many repeats took me to some dark places in my head. As I am about to do some printing now, I want to play it again. Before I saw this movie, my friend told me it's exactly a kind of movie I'd like. Now I'm so hopelessly addicted. It's surreal to go outside after being stuck in a room with Solaris music & dialogues playing in the background for so long. It's going to be 23 degrees today, I better get the fuck out.
Above images are some sketchbook drawings I've done during my Berlin trip last week. I just got over jet lagging yesterday. You get a twinge when jet lag disappears. The warm ray of trip has dissipated and the time is passing. This is my second trip to Berlin and it again showed me the time of my life. The first Berlin trip last year taught me to be more open and giving. I don't know what I've learned this year yet. I've been too busy to sit and think. I won't have chance at least til next week.

Berlin is different from other places I've been, because it's so inviting. I was rarely left alone and I felt so comfortable there. It's a magical city where people opened up everywhere I went. A city where tasty vegan icecream's readily available... I want to live there! But then if I actually live there, things would be different. My friends told me that it's even more isolating than Toronto. Berlin and Toronto, my favourite two cities. I'm grateful for every minute I spend in both cities.

I was there for Pictoplasma festival/conference. It's been a dream to be in the Pictoplasma book. I also got to be in an exhibition and gave a presentation. Lars and Peter (Pictoplasma organizers) had been overly kind to me. I'm so grateful for the opportunity. I met so many friends, whom I connected right away.
Drawing done in airplane. Someone told me that the proximity determines emotional distance between people. But I don't think a day went by without me thinking about my friends and loved ones. Even though I love Berlin, by the end of the trip, I was ready to come home. By being away, I was again reminded of how everyone and everything around me is important to me. I felt guilty not having time for people in the name of making a living. While abroad, I missed familiar faces, and the comfort of my city. I love that I completely blend-in in Toronto. When the plane landed on Toronto Pearson airport, I wanted to kiss the ground (and murmured, "God bless the Queen!").

I think that's the reason why people travel: to come home.
And lastly, a video of my Pictoplasma presentation. Thanks Steve for kindly filming!

30 minutes is a long commitment to watch some internet video, but hopefully, my dear friend Benjamin Rivers' review would convince you to sit through it:

"Oh my god, you are such an artist hipster. I don't think we can be friends anymore"

I am showing and speaking at Pictoplasma 2012! Thank you Peter and Lars!
My favourite Toronto artists Aaron Leighton and Nathan Jurevicius are also presenting.
It's a dream come true, I'm about to throw up from the excitement. It's been a year since I attended the conference. Since then, I picked up German language CDs and books to teach myself. Time just flew by, and all I can say is "Ich möchte einen tee mit soza milsch, bitte." (I'd like a tea with soymilk, please) That and "a cat is under the table"
I expect to drink a lot of tea in Germany. Perhaps with a cat under the table.
Next year, I swear, I'll keep up with the studies, so I can say more than that.

In a few days, I will be leaving for Berlin. I am so not ready, in a bit of panic. My perpetual indecision make things extra hard. I went out twice yesterday and today to look for a carry-on bag (Time I could not afford!). I just could not decide. I think I won't get a new bag after all. Last year, it took me 2 hours to get a travelling towel. God help me.

My friends in Berlin, I will be speaking on Thursday, April 12th at 8pm at .HBC.
Here is the schedule: http://berlin.pictoplasma.com/conference/schedule
I am not sure about the exhibition detail yet. I will update as soon as possible.

Oh I am bringing my giant monster head. I want to wear it at the beginning of the presentation. I hope I give a good presentation, wish me luck!Hyein Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09903329646173132601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412446009443453167.post-88386138134364992292012-03-31T17:34:00.000-07:002012-03-31T17:34:08.964-07:00Bottle Picking

Another bottle post! I picked up artist copies and some extras from Alexx today. I was so proud and happy with them, I almost cried at the coffee shop, like a crazy woman. It is something very special to see your art work on objects. Especially, Alexx' cute bottles. He worked so hard on getting the blue colour right, I was very honoured to collaborate with him. He's very inspiring and hard working.

The black/yellow one on Alexx' right hand is one and only copy for me! He tried on black/yellow colours. I LOVED that one too. But after brief polls among friends, went with the original blue/yellow. I'm so happy to own both.

You can order these bottles at Alexx' Etsy.
A video I made this evening to avoid real work. I rather play!
I watched a time management lecture today, and I'm not putting it into use yet. After I come back from Germany next month, I will sort my life, for realz!

See how one iris is off to the right? That's how my eyes actually are. And no, it has nothing to do with laser eye surgery.
This is made with a photograph of my past exhibition, this one:

I have collaborated with a wonderful Toronto based ceramic artist, Alexx Boisjoli. He is one of a kind, a very few artist in Toronto who works with decals. His works are minimal, well designed and strive for perfection. Check out his glow-in-the-dark bone china Jack-o-Lantern clocks. They are so awesome!

Because an idiot like me use finicky blue glaze in the work, Alexx had a hard time making these. I feel so bad. Had I known, I would've went for a different colour. I'm grateful for his patience.
All the photos above are taken by Alexx.

Here are the drawings I sent him for this project.
Because of my favourite artist, Sean Martindale's kind invitation, I got to be a part of his GSGS show at Art Gallery of Ontario gift shop. Remember those fine art prints you can purchase in art museums? It's like those, but Sean wanted the image is of the museum shop itself instead of a famous fine art. So here, ladies and gentlemen, I present you the empty display case of AGO gift shop. I dedicate this painting to Sean.

I originally sketched bunch of monsters twirling around the display case, but decided against it at the last minute. I could not work out the composition, and thought staying minimal worked better. Here are some details:

I have a confession to make: I have a very low self-esteem when it comes to my work, it's a constant battle. A lot of good things had been happening in my life but I had a bit of a dip a week ago. I was sinking in self-doubt for a couple of weeks. I felt like I do not deserve any of good things in life for I truly believe my work isn't good enough. I worried people would wonder, "why does she get xyz, she sucks!" I feel like such a fake sometimes, and I'm worried that you'd see through my fakeness. I'm worried that when that time comes, everything will crash down.

But illustration is commercial art, and I have to sell my work. I can't sell it properly if I don't believe in the product! Nobody will believe in me if I don't believe in myself. It's embarrassing for me everytime I post my work online and show to people. I envy people who have natural confidence. I tell myself that being unhappy with my work gives me a room to grow. And I'd like to think that many artists feel the same way about themselves. Whether these are true or not, I'm not sure.

While I rolling around, worrying about futile things, I got to see this documentary, 'Jiro Dreams of Sushi' at TIFF Lightbox last weekend. It was about a sushi master, Jiro. Although he's been making sushi all his life, he doesn't think he's sushi is perfect. He always thinks about improving sushi with passion. While watching hypnotic monotony of his graceful sushi making, I started to feel much better. I came out of the theatre, calm and content. Just keep working hard, and everything will be alright. Whatever happens, there is no point on worrying about things I have no control of.

Briefly talking about art multiples with one of my favourite artists, Tessar Lo (he's having a show in March 30th at Cooper Cole Gallery) made me dig out some of my really old work. Preparing for tomorrow's class, I dug out some more photos. I made these guys over four years ago but never posted on my blog.

I love art toys. The way they play with childhood nostalgia and generally cute aesthetic.... they are so attractive. I am quite excited to show students my collection of art toys: Friends With You, Nathan Jurevicius, Gloomy Bear, TOFU...etc. I wonder what they'd think of them.

I always wanted to make my own art toys. Four years ago, having no money to mass produce them, I said, 'fuck it, I'll make them myself.' Korean labour (me) doesn't cost much. Then came subsequent poisoning my parents' basement air with resin fumes and liquid silicon. I um... hand painted each one of them after sanding them. I also printed box design on thick papers, cut and assemble boxes one by one. No, I didn't get out much back then, and I still don't.

It's almost 2AM. That means I am going to get three hours of sleep tonight in order to get to the morning class. It's hard for me to fall asleep when I HAVE TO sleep. I also only slept three hours last night. Sorry for the lack of posting again! It's been busy, away from human contact. I've been working on my website after 4 years of procrastination. Good news of new site launch is coming soon.
Above is a quick comic jam I did with my friend, Ben Rivers over a pot of tea. He's a webdesigner, illustrator, comic artist, video game designer and a prof. How does he do it all? I have no idea. Better drawn panels are by Ben, obviously! There are some of my stuff on sale at selected stores in Toronto. You can get a hand silk-screened 2012 calendar by Kid Icarus. They invited Toronto illustrators to illustrate each month. I mentioned it back in my November post. Above is the full illustration. I am not suppose to show my image, so I changed the background and colour. You can purchase the calendar at Kid Icarus.

Speaking of buying stuff, I bought a couple of silicon squeeze bottles by GoToob today. I wanted to fill it with Aveeno lotion for Lee. They were small enough to carry around in a pocket. I was so excited about them. Made with silicon! But once I got home, I read on their website that Aveeno lotion is not recommended inside of the bottles. I looked up each ingredient and found out that there is a type of silicon in Aveeno lotion. Silicon in the lotion would melt the bottle. Craziness!
I already sanitized, washed and dried the bottles so I cannot refund them. But I'm sure I can find million ways to use them, they are so cool. I love silicon.Hyein Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09903329646173132601noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412446009443453167.post-81265161011119868832012-02-09T21:58:00.000-08:002012-02-11T13:29:58.308-08:00Hungry Lies

My illustrator friends Ben Rivers and Matt Daley, we all occupied this issue of Broken Pencil side-by-side :D

It seems like I only post when I'm sick one way or other, but yes, I am sick again. As I lay with a hot water bottle, I thought, 'why don't I post on my blog?' My apologies, I will post once a week like before. Many news to cover.
Anyways, back to being sick, I ate a huge pile of deep fried squash last night, which made me so sick. My body cannot take the beatings as it used to.

My very nice friend Gregory found me tickets to "Kim's Convenience" by Soulpepper Theatre. I went to see it last night after eating a pile of deep fried stuff. Good god, I think my stomach churned watching the show. It was about Korean first generation, sacrificing everything to come to Canada and raising their kids. A story of my parents! My dad used to be a top interior designer in Korea, and my mom was an art teacher who had many friends. They threw away everything to come to Canada for my brother and I. They are nothing now, just working in a engraving/embroidery shop, while strangers treat them rudely. My dad loves Canada, but my mom still has a hard time connecting.
Anyways, the play was suppose to be a tear jerker. But I couldn't cry. I almost threw up and had many impulses to leave the theatre. I felt soooooo guilty. I already feel guilty all the time, I don't know if I needed more. I'm grateful that my parents brought me to Canada. I wish I were making tonnes of money to make their lives comfortable. Hahaha.. but I can barely take care of myself. One day, mom. I'll get you that diamond ring you never got. And give my dad a dirty look. I'm kidding.

In the spirit of this stream of consciousness writing exercise... more on injuries. My body has many patches of bruises from playing extreme ping pong two days ago. Good god, I need new shoes. The sneakers I have are heelys. They are one of those sneakers that have wheels in the sole. If any one of you are thinking of buying those... please don't. I almost killed myself many times, and they are not as cool as you think it'd be if you are over 25. I took out the wheels to wear as a regular sneakers. But the heels are still slippery plastic. I slipped, rolled and fell, attempting to hit the ping pong ball.

Another big bruise came from a pancake accident. Suddenly, piles of my owl bowls, plates, etc. crashed down on my hand in my kitchen. I got big bruises. I don't care for pain, I just hope it doesn't leave scars.
And that leads to an interesting topic. Pancakes! Bunena chocolate vegan pancakes to be exact! I got very good at making pancakes believe or not. Here is the recipe. Fold in dark chocolate pieces just before pan frying. Or just come over, bring some ripe bunenas. I'll make you pancakes anytime of the day.Hyein Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09903329646173132601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412446009443453167.post-5915080370059584532012-01-17T19:18:00.000-08:002012-03-30T00:07:15.892-07:00AGO Gift Shop

My favourite artist, Sean Martindale is having a show in AGO. The show title is NOW. The opening party is this Friday 7pm. He was very kind to invite me to be a part of his project of taking over AGO souvenir shop. I was super excited to be part of it. I drew on bunch of art-print greeting card boxes and on individual cards. There were 20 cards in each box, and I drew original drawings on them all! I also drew on AGO souvenir pop-up cards. They can be available for purchase in February, but you can see them at AGO gift shop in a meanwhile.

Here is the opening party facebook invite:
I love the clever idea (I wish I could take credit, but it was Sean's idea!) of making mass-produced art-print items back into original art.
Here are some shots of the gift shop items. I'm really sick right now. Head spinning and everything! So please pardon me for the poor writing + photograph qualities.
Happy Happy New Year!
My apologies for the lack of blog post in the month of December. I usually disappear, sucked in by the black hole during the holiday seasons. I've been working at my parents' store for the past 13 years of my life during the holiday rush. We have a store in a mall in Brampton. It is a monstrous place. I worked average 13 hours a day, listening to eternal loop of Carol songs and being yelled at by angry mall customers. I don't understand. If Christmas stress them so much, why bother celebrating? Anyways... my parents usually go on annual vacation on the Christmas day and come back at the end of the first week of January. So my brother and I had to take over the store while they were gone. But this year had been different. They could not afford the annual trip. It's very sad... but I got to have my first ever New Year's Eve, ever!
There were parties, countdown and everything. Just like in the movies. Staying warm inside with one of my favourite movies, Strange Days, I had the best New Years ever. 2011 had been kind to me. I hope 2012 is better than ever. I have a good feeling about it.

To start off 2012 blog post, I present you with the first ever process photos! With my bad memory, I always forget to take photos between steps, so I never got the complete process photos until now. This painting, "From London, with Love" is for Jason B., I am very grateful for his commission. It was the first time for me to paint on such a big canvas (48" X 36"). I worked on oversized papers before, but never painted on a giant canvas. It was challenging and fun at the same time. I'm going to paint more giant paintings in the future for sure.
I am invited to participate in Pictoplasma Paris! I have three pieces in the show. They are going to be exhibited in the prestigious LA GAÎTÉ LYRIQUE gallery.
OH MY GOD!!!!
I tried to act cool, but I just can't. I LIVE for Pictoplasma. I feel like I'm just passing days until I can go to the next Pictoplasma. Having a show at Pictoplasma is a dream come true. I almost fainted. I wish I can go to Paris for the show. I've never been to Paris. It sounds lame, but it's one city I don't want to go alone. I heard it's a romantic city. I am contemplating, but I am saving up for Berlin Pictoplasma next April. I still have two more days to decide... Should I just book the ticket to Paris? *biting nails*
Thank you Lars for this wonderful opportunity. I'm so honoured to be a part of it!
My favourite illustrator and an awesome person Aaron Leighton is also part of the show. The top sketch was done during pen club, drawing in a bar with bunch of friends. The translation of the title is, "Fuck, don't cry." Right side of the picture says, "Don't draw tears." I was attempting to not draw tears. So instead, I opted for bunch of small cubes. It is a bit strange to write about how I felt couple of months ago because things are quite awesome right now. After I finished my Master's in September, I dug a hole and lived in it for few weeks. I had to re-write my thesis like 28 times and when everything was over, things that I didn't have time to deal with all flooded back. All rolled up in bed sheets, I'd just sit and stared at computer screen, clicking random stuff all day for two weeks. Didn't talk to anyone. Hahaha... I will NEVER pursue another education again. This is it. Let the unlearning begin!

Seriously cool store in Kensington Market, Kid Icarus, invited illustrators to illustrate each month of 2012. I got OCTOBER! Halloween is my favourite holiday, so I was so excited about this. Here are some cropped images of the Calendar.
My stomach hurts a little looking at it because I really want to put wood texture at the background. I will try it once the calendars sell out. There is a limited edition of only 100, so order yours now! A lot of my talented friends are also participating. Here is more info about the 2012 calendar project:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

On Sunday December 4th 2011, our highly anticipated 2012 Handprinted Calendar will be available for sale at our storefront in Kensington Market. You can also pick up an early copy at Handmade Holiday, Saturday December 3rd, St. Stephen-in-the-Fields. The calendar is a limited edition of 125 copies, with only 100 available for sale at $80 each.

If you are unfamiliar with the project, the concept is to take 12 artists and produce a calendar with each artist choosing one month to illustrate and only two colours to pull it off. There are no guidelines on layout or how the information is presented, the artist has full control. The entire calendar is screen printed by hand from the cover, right through to the backing.
Calendars will be available for sale at Kid Icarus, and other locations (TBA).
I won RGD Ontario scholarship for Design Thinkers 2011. Thank you RGD!

This year's Design Thinkers was amazing. RGD arranged me to meet Eric Ryan and Jessica Hische, both of whom I was dying to meet! Yeah and of course I was very scared. I acted very strangely, but let's not talk about that. Their talks were amazingly inspirational.Hyein Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09903329646173132601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412446009443453167.post-19514691802637850712011-11-29T23:09:00.001-08:002011-11-30T00:22:20.254-08:00Hand Lettered Canzine Posters ++ Pink Monster

Wonderful people at Canzine - Thank you Lindsay and Tara! - got me to work on this year's Canzine advertising campaign. Working with them was so much fun. Thank you for letting me do whatever I want to do! These furry fishes were 11X17" posters that were posted all around Toronto. I actually am rarely happy with my work, but I must say, I love the furry fish. I was very proud to see the posters reproduced. The letters "Canzine 2011" were embossed and everything was offset printed on beautiful papers.

I hand-lettered all the type in the poster and I think that worked much better than computer fonts. This year's theme was "Piracy." I thought of plagiarism. These fish are copying each other in circles. They are mostly unhappy because they are being copied by the other. I got the furry fish idea from this movie/tv show I saw long time ago. It was set in a Victorian era. There still were unknown parts in the world still. Explorers would travel and bring back exotic stuffed animals. I remember the scene where the explorer/traveler brought a stuffed furry fish. It was of course fake, he probably was swindled or made it himself. Maybe he never went overseas. The woman in the scene was so surprised by the furry fish, she dropped the wine glass. That moment is so vivid, but I have no idea what movie that was. Let me know if any of you remember what it was. And are furry fish common thing? Meaning, are they in our collective conscious?

I had a table at this year's Canzine (last month). It was fun as always! Thank you everyone for kindly visiting my table. I took a photo in front of a wall covered with my Canzine posters. So happy!
Lastly, here is another pink monster painting I did! The background is Toronto cityscape. This was commissioned for a wonderful patron. Quite big, 18X24". It was so much fun to work on. I'm so honoured to have my art work hung on his living room. Thank you, you know who you are. xoHyein Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09903329646173132601noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1412446009443453167.post-64303170965249004872011-11-28T21:48:00.001-08:002011-11-28T23:53:00.920-08:00Ammo Magazine + Art Elemento Features // if humans can love a machine

Art Elemento, an English art magazine from Kwangju, Korea had been kind enough to feature my work in their wonderful website. The cover shows my noodle cup promo. Joe, the awesome editor showcased my work in four-page spread. I am very grateful.
I wrote the article for my section. I feel so insecure about my writing. I hope I didn't babble too much. You can read the whole thing for free here:
Because I've been too busy to upload on my blog, there still are so many catching up to do. I hope I remember everything. Sorry for being so scattered.

There was a big change in my life a month ago. I finally decided to join the human civilization and buy a cellphone. I know, I know. If you ever talked to me before, you know that I made some dumb iPhone apps. I made apps and don't have a cellphone?! I was probably the only Korean in the world without a cellphone. I felt like floating and smug. But deep inside, I knew that as soon as I get a smart phone, I'd be horribly addicted to it. And I was right; I'm hopelessly addicted. I feel a little uneasy without it. For the first time in a month, I took a walk without my cellphone tonight, and it felt liberating.
No, I don't really need a smart phone. I'm home all day anyways, why do I need a tiny computer with me all the time? The only thing that push me over the edge was... twitter. I envied my friends twitting photos via mobile. I had to take photos with a digital camera, import the photo to my computer, turn on the internet, and then tweet. Now, I can be like a normal person, just take the photo with a goddamn phone and tweet right away. God, certain material possession can definitely make a person happier. I love you, smart phone. Yes, I bought a smart phone for purely superficial and useless reasons. Gut me.
